CAMP OVERVIEW: Students will participate in daily jazz combo rehearsals, theory, listening and instrument master classes, and jazz improvisation classes. This curriculum is designed to focus on skills necessary to improvise in the jazz idiom. Eligibility for this camp is open to rising 7th grade through 12th grade and all levels of ability from beginning to advanced are welcome. Staff is comprised of ECU Jazz Faculty augmented by several leading jazz professionals from around the state.
SCHEDULE: Arrival and check-in is Sunday, June 26 between 1:00 and 4:00 pm, followed by an informal audition used to determine combo placement. Every effort will be made to place participants with similar experience in the same combos. The final concert will be held in the Fletcher Music Center Recital Hall at 7:00 pm on Thursday, June 30 after which all campers will be dismissed for travel home. Be sure to schedule family activities to allow students to remain for the entire camp. Early departure creates hardships for the musical organizations and a feeling of lack of completion for the student, as a main focus of the camp is the final concert.
ROOM AND BOARD: Campers will live as college students in air-conditioned dormitories with meals provided by our brand-new university cafeterias. All campus health facilities, under the supervision of a university physician, are available to campers at all times if needed. All camp activities are properly supervised by counselors at all times. No student should carry any great amount of money for travel, or valuables during camp. It will be possible to place money for travel, etc., with the faculty counselor in the dormitory to which you are assigned. It is suggested that traveler’s checks in small amounts be used. PERSONAL CHECKS CANNOT BE CASHED. Students will not be permitted to ride in cars while at camp. Students riding in automobiles with parents must have their parents sign them out of the dormitory and back in upon return. It is requested that students wear shoes at all times.
Registration will be held in the dorm on Sunday. If you have a roommate selected, plan to register at the same time. If necessary to arrive at a different hour than the above, notify the Music Office. Also, be sure to bring your HEALTH CERTIFICATE (PDF).
