The ASTA String Education Scholarship

The North Carolina American String Teachers Association scholarship has been established to encourage young string players to pursue a career in music education. The scholarship will be awarded to one high school senior who is a resident of North Carolina, plays a string instrument, and intends on majoring in music education at a North Carolina college or university. The recipient of this award will receive $1,000 towards tuition as well as a one-year student membership to ASTA.

Guidelines:

To be eligible for this one-year award, applicants must meet the following criteria:
  1. Be a high school senior
  2. Play a string instrument (violin, viola, cello, string bass, harp, or guitar).
  3. Be a member of their school orchestra (if one exists).
  4. Be a resident of North Carolina.
  5. Secure a recommendation letter from a private teacher or orchestra director who is a member of the American String Teachers Association. 
  6. Have applied to an accredited college or university to major in music education for the fall semester immediately following high school graduation.
  7. Have a high school cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher (on a 4-point scale). 
  8. Submit an audition tape/CD (two contrasting selections totaling no more than 15 minutes in length).
  9. Complete an application and include a one-page essay explaining
    • a. Why you would like to be a music teacher.
    • b. How this scholarship will benefit your future plans.

Applications must be postmarked no later than March 31, 2008. Recommendation letters must be submitted along with the application and essay in a sealed envelope with the recommender’s signature on back flap.
