Students will participate in daily jazz combo and Large Ensemble rehearsals, theory, listening and instrument master classes, and jazz improvisation classes. This curriculum is designed to focus on skills necessary to improvise in the jazz idiom. Eligibility for this camp is open to rising 7th grade through 12th grade and all levels of ability from beginning to advanced are welcome. Staff is comprised of ECU Jazz Faculty augmented by several leading jazz professionals from around the state.
Arrival and check-in is Sunday between 1:00 and 4:00 pm, followed by an informal audition used to determine combo placement. Every effort will be made to place participants with similar experience in the same combos. The final concert will be held in the Fletcher Music Center Recital Hall at 2:00 pm on Friday. Be sure to schedule family activities to allow students to remain for the entire camp. Early departure creates hardships for the musical organizations and a feeling of lack of completion for the student, as a main focus of the camp is the final concert.
