The Summer Choral Conducting Institute is a weeklong institute for teachers, church musicians, and other aspiring conductors who wish to grow as artists, musicians, and leaders through daily seminars, conducting master classes, discussions, peer interaction, and ensemble singing.
  • Build and refine your conducting gesture. Review the basics and discover the principles that lead to conducting clarity and artistry.
  • Work with a paid resident choir that will be responsive, supportive, and immanently capable of meeting (and surpassing) your musical expectations.
  • Focus on great choral repertoire (much of it new) that you can use in your programs.
  • Observe and build techniques for working with high school voices using the assembled ECU Summer Choral Camp Chorus.
  • Build career-enhancing connections with peers, instructors, and singers.
  • Rediscover the joys of singing in an excellent choral ensemble.
  • Enjoy hands-on access to musical resources on display from the Burrage Music Company.
  • Enjoy a reading session that will build your repertoire.
  • Contact Info: Dr. Daniel Bara, director; ph: 252-328-6243; e-mail: barad@ecu.edu

The Summer Choral Camp opens its doors to all rising seventh-grade through twelfth-grade singers desiring the opportunity for great music-making, great friendship, and great fun. This weeklong camp, which will run concurrently with the Summer Choral Conducting Institute, will create a community of young singers who love choral music and desire to become better singers and musicians. Singers will also gain the opportunity to work with ECU School of Music faculty and choral music educators from eastern North Carolina. The ECU Summer Choral Camp emphasizes total musical development through a broad range of musical activities that serve to strengthen vocal skills, music reading, and aural perception of music, as well as other areas taken as electives. Large and small ensemble rehearsals will be conducted by Dr. Ward and other camp faculty throughout the week, culminating in a public concert with the Summer Choral Conducting Institute.
  • Develop your music reading skills.
  • Develop relationships with singers from across the region/state.
  • Have fun and find the enjoyment of being a part of an excellent choral ensemble.
  • Take classes on various areas of music, including private voice or piano lessons with university faculty.
  • Enjoy time for recreation at university facilities.
  • Contact Info: Dr. Jeffrey Ward, director; ph: 328-5534; e-mail: wardj@ecu.edu
