1156 (F) (S), 1166 (S) (SS). Basic Musicianship I & II (3 credits each)
Prerequisite for 1166: MUSC 1156. Basic concepts of scales, melody, rhythm, form, and notation with particular emphasis on functional harmony and analysis.

1176 (F) (S), 1186 (S) (SS). Basic Musicianship Lab I & II (1 credit each).
Prerequisite for 1186: MUSC 1176. Development of skills in aural comprehension, sight singing, performance, and conducting.

2156 (F), 2166 (S). Basic Musicianship III & IV (3 credits each) Prerequisite for 2156: MUSC 1166;
Prerequisite for 2166: MUSC 2156.
Study of selected Baroque, nineteenth century, and twentieth century styles and genres with particular emphasis on analysis, chromatic functional harmony, and twentieth century compositional techniques.

2176 (F), 2186 (S). Basic Musicianship Lab III & IV (1 credit each).
Prerequisite for 2176: MUSC 1186;
Prerequisite for 2186: MUSC 2176.
Continued development of skills in aural comprehension, sight singing, performance, and conducting.

3176 (F). Basic Musicianship V (2 credits) (WI)
Prerequisites: MUSC 2166, 2186.
Analytical study of complete works for large ensembles. Applies analysis to practical situations of performance and conducting.

4506. Directed Study in Music Theory (2) (F) (S) (SS) Conferences scheduled as needed with a minimum of 1 hour meeting per week. May be repeated for a maximum of 4 s.h. credit. Prerequisite: MUSC 3176. Required of all undergraduate theory-composition majors who specialize in theory.

5366. Special Studies in Music Theory (3) (SS) May be repeated for credit with consent of department chair. Prerequisite: MUSC 2166 or graduate standing in MUSC or consent of instructor. Subject matter to be determined according to needs and interests.

4507, 4508, 4509. Topics and Issues in Music (1,2,3) May be repeated for credit. Prerequisite: Consent of instructor. Research into problems and issues relevant to the field of music.

6327. Counterpoint (3) (S99) Counterpoint based on a framework of harmonic background rather than the combination of melodic lines. Materials used from the works of J. S. Bach and other composers of the Baroque and Classic periods.

6328. Language of Post-Tonal Music (3) (S2000) Materials and techniques used by composers of the twentieth century. Stylistic writing and analysis of the styles of selected composers of this century.

1406 (S), 2406 (F), 2416 (S). Music History and Literature (2,2,2) (WI) Survey from early Greek music to present day, divided according to stylistic eras. Correlated listening and readings in history of music.

3055. History of the American Musical Theatre (3) (F99) Same as THEA 3055. Prerequisite: MUSC 2166 or consent of instructor. Styles and periods of the American musical theatre.

5406. Music of the Baroque Era (2) (F98) 1600-1750. All types of music from Monteverdi and Schutz to Bach and Handel in relation to philosophical background of the times and the arts.

5416. Music of Rococo and Classic Periods (2) (S99) 1720-1800. Development of homophony, "style gallant," developments in symphony, sonata, concerto, and opera in relation to social, economic, and political conditions of the times. Includes Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven.

5426. Music of the Romantic Era (2) (F99) 1800-1900. All types of music against backdrop of literary revolt and development of humanitarian philosophy. From Schubert to the end of the century.

5436. Twentieth Century Music (2) (S2000) 1900 to present. All types of music keyed to developments in culture and the related arts. Trends and "isms" from Debussy to the present.

5547. Hymnology (2) (F98) Comprehensive historical study of all important hymnology movements from pre-Christian times to the present.

5567. History of Liturgies (2) (S99) Survey of the nature and history of liturgy in the Christian church.

5616. Historical Development of Solo Vocal Literature (3) (F99) Survey of the history of solo vocal literature with concentration on the literature of major composers.

5667 (F99), 5677 (S2000). Organ History, Literature, and Design (2,2) Recommended Prerequisite for 5677: MUSC 5667. Historical survey of organ literature from the earliest manuscripts through the music of J. S. Bach in the first term and from J. S. Bach to the present in the second term. Basic principles of organ construction and style will be studied with an emphasis upon the relationship between the organ and its repertoire throughout the centuries.

5737. Piano Literature and Advanced Pedagogy (3) (F99) Survey of literature for piano in relation to contemporary pedagogical use. Intermediate through advanced-level literature from the Renaissance through Beethoven and Schubert.

5747. Piano Literature and Advanced Pedagogy (3) (S2000) Recommended Prerequisite: MUSC 5737. Survey of literature for piano in relation to contemporary pedagogical use. Intermediate through advanced-level literature from Chopin and Schumann to the present day.

5757. Lute and Guitar Literature (3) (S2000) Comprehensive survey of the solo literature for lute and guitar from the Renaissance to the twentieth century.

5796. Opera History (3) (F98) History of the lyric theatre from the late sixteenth century to the present, emphasizing examples from the outstanding operas of the various periods in music history.

5887 (S2000), 5897 (F2000). Survey of Performance Practice (2,2) Original and secondary sources of performance practices from the Renaissance to the present, including development of instruments and comparison of notated music with actual performance practices.

5906 (F99), 5916 (S2000). Choral Literature (2,2) Historical and stylistic survey and critical evaluation of choral literature for use with school, community, and church choirs..

5926. Wind Instrument Literature (2) (F99) Chamber music, band, wind, and percussion literature for all phases of instrumental instruction.

5456. Introduction to Ethnomusicology (2) (S99) Open to music or ANTH majors with consent of instructor. Theories, methods, techniques, and fundamental concepts used in the study of nonwestern and primitive music.

5466. Folk and Indigenous Music of Europe and the Americas (2) (S2000) Open to area minors and ANTH majors with consent of instructor. Prerequisite: Undergraduate courses in music. Ethnic music of the West surveyed with particular Attention to society, culture, and tradition.

5476. African Music (2) (F99) Prerequisite: Open to area minors and ANTH majors with consent of instructor. Sub-Saharan African music surveyed in the context of African society and culture.

Electronic Music Composition (2,2) Prerequisite: MUSC 2326 or consent of instructor.  MUSC 3366: A "hands-on" approach to a survey of approaches to composition with media ranging from reel-to-reel tape machines through analog synthesizers (Moog) to ProTools digital audio editing.  MUSC 3386: Composition with varied electronic music.  MUSC 3386 may be repeated.

4326 (F), 4336 (S). Composition (3,3) Weekly seminar and conference. Prerequisite: MUSC 3336 or consent of instructor. Advanced study.

4366 (F), 4376 (S). Advanced Composition in Electronic Media (3,3) Prerequisite: MUSC 3386 or consent of instructor. Advanced composition in electronic music with emphasis on larger, Extended forms, tape and instrumental combination, real-time performance, and intermedia.

5346. Modern Instrumental Arranging (2) (S99) Prerequisite: MUSC 3176 or consent of instructor. Development of arranging skills and techniques as applied to instrumental music (e.g., stage band, marching band, symphonic band, and orchestra).

1008. Music Theory for Nonmusic Majors (3) (F) (S) Prerequisite: Ability to read music or consent of instructor. Designed for the nonmusic major. Various elements of music theory: notation, intervals, scales, rhythm, harmony, and form.

1018 (F), 1028 (S). Music Reading and Fundamentals for Nonmusic Majors (2,2) Prerequisite for 1028: MUSC 1018. Designed for the nonmusic major in the learning of music reading skills and the fundamentals of music.

2208. Music Appreciation (2) (F) (S) (SS) Introduction to the basic materials of music and their utilization in the understanding and enjoyment of music of different styles and periods. Includes lectures and live performances. Emphasizes development of aural awareness.

2218. Orchestral Music (2) (SS) Mainstream of the development of orchestral music from 1600 to the present with reference to historical background and the other arts. Emphasis on analytical listening.

2226. American Popular Music (3) a music appreciation course with the broad range of popular American music as its subject matter. It is devoted to a survey of American popular music from the 19th Century to the present, as well as related musical styles that influenced the development of popular music.

2228. Music of the Theatre (2) (SS) May count toward MUSC major electives. Recommended Prerequisite: MUSC 2208. Comprehensive survey of the types and styles of music encountered in theatrical performances with a special emphasis on opera, operetta, Broadway musical comedy, and ballet.

2248. Music of the World's Peoples (2) (F) (S) (SS) May count toward MUSC major electives. Intended to encourage a broader comprehension and appreciation of non-Western music and an increased awareness of the music and musical thought of other cultures. Basic survey of the music of non-Western cultures from Asia, Africa, the Near East, the Pacific, and South America. Section 001 is required for all music majors.

2258. History of Jazz Music (2) (F) (S) (SS) May count toward MUSC major electives. Study of the history of jazz from its origin to the present.

2268. Music of Latin America (2) (F) (S) Introduction to popular and classical music of Latin America, including the effect of Latin-American historical events on its music, basic musical concepts, and vocabulary. Emphasis on aural awareness.
