Bachelor of Music (BM) Program
The Music Education Program of the School of Music offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees in Music Education. Our program has been providing training for music educators for over 50 years. Our students are employed in public and private institutions around the country.
The goal of the undergraduate Music Education program at ECU is to prepare, develop, and advance you to a professional level through an experiential program that emphasizes attainment of concert performance and basic and new knowledge taught in the core and teaching areas. *The Bachelor of Music in Music Education leads to K-12 Music licensure in the state of North Carolina when all degree and licensure requirements are met.
The MM in Music Education is predominantly online (emphasis in Pedagogical Studies is 100% online), and has two options: one is in teacher education (approved for North Carolina teacher licensure), the other option does not include licensure preparation.*
Music Therapy emphasis in the MM in Music Education is another option that prepares students for therapy licensing board exams while completing a masters degree in music education that does not include teacher education preparation.

*Upon successful completion of educator preparation program degree requirements and licensure requirements for the State of North Carolina, such as, but not limited to, testing and national assessments, candidates will be eligible for an ECU recommendation for a NC license. However, final licensure granting decisions are the sole responsibility of the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction not ECU. Candidates who graduate and seek out of state employment will have to meet the receiving state’s requirements for licensure. There is no automatic licensure reciprocity between states. ECU will verify the completion of an approved, accredited program for candidates who seek employment out of state, and those candidates will be responsible for working with the receiving state to complete any additional requirements needed to obtain the license for employment.
