Admission and Application Procedures and Deadlines
Undergraduate Students
Acceptance by the university is the only criteria necessary to enter the School of Art and Design. The intention to major in art should be indicated on the application to insure proper advisor assignment. Application to the University is through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.
Application Deadlines
Deadlines for fall semester enrollment are March 15 for those applying for freshman status and April 15 for transfer students. However, you are strongly encouraged to apply by January 1. In order to be considered for the Academic Scholarship Program, you must request a scholarship application from the admissions office and submit it no later than February 1.
Graduate Students
Admission to the graduate art program requires admission to the University through the Graduate School and acceptance by the School of Art and Design on the basis of professional competency.
In addition to the bachelor's degree required for admission to the Graduate School at ECU, applicants for the Master's degree program in the School of Art and Design must have the equivalent of a Bachelor of Art degree from an accredited institution.
All University and School of Art and Design admission requirements must be satisfied by October 15 or February 15.

School of Art and Design MFA Submission Process
To apply to the MFA program you will need to assemble one application package and send it to the ECU Graduate School. That application package must include your application form, your transcripts, 3 letters of reference, a statement of purpose, scores from the GRE or the MAT and a portfolio of 20 slides or a CD with 20 images of your work. The Graduate School will assess the transcript and the GRE or MAT score and make a recommendation to us. Your complete application package will be forwarded to the faculty in the area to which you are applying. They will evaluate the whole package and make the final recommendation to the Graduate School. To begin the process, follow the directions at the link below:

School of Art and Design MAEd. Submission Process
To apply to our MAED program, you will need to assemble one application package and send it to the ECU Graduate School to matriculate into East Carolina University as a graduate student. That application package includes your application form, your transcripts, letters of reference, statement about why you want to be a graduate student in art education, scores from the GRE or the MAT, proof that you hold a teaching license in art education, and your portfolio of 20 slides (or a CD) of your work. The Graduate School will assess the transcripts and the GRE or MAT score and makes a recommendation to the Art Education Area. Your complete application package will be forwarded to the Art Education faculty. They will evaluate the whole package and make the final recommendation to the Graduate School. You may take up to 9 hours as a non degree seeking student that can be applied toward your degree if you are accepted into the program. You must first apply to the Graduate School for admittance as a non degree seeking student following the process described at the link below;

We accept up to 6 hours of transfer credit, which must be approved by the Art Education Area Coordinator and with official transcripts. Unfortunately we do not grant any credit for National Board Certification.

Financial Aid
Financial assistance for East Carolina University art students is available through the School of Art and Design Scholarship Program (undergraduate level, see below), the university-wide Academic Scholarship Program, and the ECU Office of Student Financial Aid. Graduate students may seek assistantships (see also, below).
School of Art and Design Scholarship Program
School of Art and Design scholarships for undergraduate students are awarded primarily on the basis of ability as reflected in the art portfolio, academic excellence, and with some scholarships, need. Most scholarships are awarded to students already in attendance in the School of Art and Design. Scholarships are contingent upon certain guidelines and availability of funding.

Richard Steven Bean Memorial Scholarship in Communication Arts (awarded to a full time undergraduate majoring in art with a concentration in Communication Arts)
Art Enthusiasts Scholarships (awarded to a full time undergraduate currently majoring in art)
University Book Exchange Scholarship (awarded to a full time undergraduate currently majoring in art)
Jennie K. Jewelry Scholarship (awarded to a full time undergraduate majoring in art with a concentration in Metal Design)
Claire E. Armstrong Graduate Fellowship (awarded to an accepted or full time graduate Master of Fine Arts student)
DeElla Wade Willis Scholarship (awarded to a full time undergraduate student who has either been accepted for or is concentrating in Textile Design, Fabric Design or Weaving Design)
K Eastern Carolina Advertising Scholarship (awarded on a rotation basis between the School of Art and Design, Department of Marketing and the Department of Communication to a student in an advertising-related field)
Gravely Foundation Scholarship (awarded to a rising junior, senior or graduate art student who has been accepted for admission or is currently full time)
Tran and Marilyn Gordley Scholarship (a recruitment scholarship awarded to an accepted student on the basis of artistic talent, minimum or projected 2.5 GPA, demonstrated commitment to art)
Wellington B. Gray Memorial Scholarship in Art Education (awarded to a full time undergraduate student accepted into Art Education)
Out of State, Special Talent Tuition Waivers (awarded to out-of-state art students in an amount not to exceed $475 per year)
North Carolina Teaching Fellows Program ECU Teaching Fellows participate in academic seminars, leadership development opportunities, professional internships, and social and cultural experiences. Throughout the four years, East Carolina University Teaching Fellows also work as tutors, travel with other fellows, study in classes offered through the Honors Program, perform service work, plan recruitment initiatives and serve on various committees.

Graduate Students/Assistantships
The financial aid program for graduate students offers assistantships in a variety of areas.
The School of Art and Design's graduate application criteria is available upon request by calling or writing the School of Art and Design and the ECU Graduate School.
If you are applying for a graduate assistantship for fall, spring or summer semester, you should submit your application materials to the School of Art and Design as early as possible, but no later than February 1 or October 1. In addition, out-of-state students may request consideration for a possible waiver of out-of-state tuition, by writing the SOA&D Graduate Coordinator and submitting all application materials in full by February 1 or October 1.
