To enter the Graphic Design program, a student must be accepted to East Carolina University and indicate the intention to earn a BFA in graphic design in the School of Art and Design. Upon completion of foundation prerequisites, students take art 2200 (offered only in the fall) and art 2210 (offered only in the spring).

After students have satisfactorily completed art 2200 and 2210, they can submit a portfolio in order to be considered for acceptance into the graphic design area. This portfolio consists of design work created in these two sophomore classes. Specific criteria for this portfolio will be distributed several weeks before the submission date (usually in May.) A committee of the faculty reviews this body of work. Students submitting a portfolio must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.6 in the survey and all studio art concentration courses attempted. Entrance is highly competitive and space is limited. Not all students who satisfactorily complete art 2200 and art 2210 will be accepted into the major and upper level courses. Student selection is based on the quality of work submitted in the portfolio, process books from assigned projects, the student’s work ethic, and the overall professionalism demonstrated during class, where students are expected to have participated in discussions and class critiques.

(Students not accepted to their chosen major may rework their portfolios and submit a second time if they so choose. Revised portfolios are accepted during the end-of-the-year submission. There may be an opportunity to submit portfolios at the end of the fall semester. A December portfolio review is held at the discretion of area faculty. Portfolios will not be considered at any other times. Resubmitted portfolios will be judged more strictly because of the extra time the students have had to rework them.)

Upon acceptance to the program, the purchase of a laptop computer is required. For specifics relative to this see [internal link]“laptop support” under resources.

senior portfolio review and exhibition
In their final semester of the Graphic Design program students must submit a body of work for review by area faculty. This review is to determine whether a student has created a significant body of work suitable for an exhibition. Each BFA candidate must hang a senior exhibit to complete SoAD requirements for graduation. The review by faculty occurs approximately a month before the student’s exhibition allowing time for any additional work necessary in order to receive final approval prior to graduation. The final review is rigorous and any work removed by the faculty may not be exhibited. The faculty must judge that there is sufficient work of an acceptable quality in order to approve a student’s senior exhibition.

Students are also required to design and display a poster promoting their exhibition; tight sketches for two different designs must be presented during the senior review. Failure to have these sketches will result in the student’s show not being approved.

Design Associates/AIGA student chapter
DA is the ECU student guild that promotes the interests of Graphic Design, Illustration, Photography, and Animation / Interactive Design. Student members join DA for a nominal fee.  Activities include guest lecturers and trips. DA has enhanced student learning in numerous ways such as bringing nationally recognized individuals to lecture, and attending professional events sponsored by local groups such as PACE or AIGA/Raleigh. Students have organized trips such as visiting NY city to tour professional studios and to Washington, DC to attend the AIGA national conference.

This group is solely student run and relies on the involvement of all majors to maximize its potential as a resource. All members and specifically Graphic Design majors are urged to join the AIGA Student Chapter, which is coordinated through DA. In addition to reduced fees for events, student AIGA members gain access to a national discussion on design issues through publications and a website that includes content specifically for students. Membership provides access to a national database for internships and jobs.

Visual Arts Forum
This school-wide organization seeks to establish communication among the various areas that are the sum of the School of Art and Design. VAF is the umbrella funding source for the student guilds such as Design Associates. Student participation is vital and encouraged.

scholarships and awards
Each year students may submit materials in order to be considered for a number of scholarships, some of which are specific to areas or level of student. Information packages are made available in the media center when it is time to submit applications. All students are urged to apply.

exhibition opportunities
Every year SoAD sponsors the undergraduate exhibition. Each area juries student entries; acceptance into this show is an honor. The selection of work to receive awards is made by an outside juror. Some awards are discipline-specific and some are exhibition wide.
