Tom Braswell is Interim Director of the Wellington B. Gray Gallery at ECU. He has a BA from N.C. State University in English and an MFA, studio in photography, from Clemson University where he studied with Sam Wang. Much of his "undergraduate" studies in photography took place at Penland School of Crafts where he studied with John Scarlata, and at the Appalachian Environmental Arts Center in Highlands, NC where he studied with Judy Dater, Linda Connor, Marilyn Bridges, and Walter Chappell. In 1983 he studied poetry with Allen Ginsberg and Gary Snyder in the summer Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at Naropa Institute of Buddhist Sudies. Braswell has taught photography at Barton College, Meredith College, and Clemson University. He began teaching at ECU as an adjunct in 2001. Braswell works in all photographic formats and with a variety of photographic processes including black and white, cyanotype, platinum/palladium, tintype, Polaroid transfer, and digital imaging. Other areas of art practice include bookarts, assemblage/sculpture and performance/action.
