The Museum Without Walls project was a distance learning program
that combined computer applications with flexible, interdisciplinary
curriculum modules. The first of its modules was created around
images from the African art collections of the East Carolina University
School of Art and Design(SOAD). The immediate audience for the
interdisciplinary program is formed by school districts in eastern North
Carolina &151; a predominately rural, economically disadvantaged
region. Anticipated outcomes of the project are (1) increased academic
achievement in the arts and sciences for learners and (2) expanded
instructional and technology skills for in-service and preservice
teachers. The final products of the Museum Without Walls will be a
distance learning program on the World Wide Web and a high
resolution CD. These products will be available to students, artists, and
other interested viewers around the world.
