The photography program in the School of Art and Design offers undergraduate and graduate students an opportunity to explore ideas using traditional photography, digital imaging and non-silver processes. Studies in video, web design, graphic design, interactive media and 3-D modeling complement the curriculum. The program is supplemented with visiting artists, field trips and the possibility of study abroad.

Undergraduate Courses:

A Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree with a concentration in photography requires 10 courses in photography for a total of 30 hours.

Submission requirements for a BFA with a concentration in photograpy:
Prior to portfolio submission a student must  complete ART 2220 and ART 3260 and have a minimum 2.6 GPA. The submitted portfolio for photography should contain:
    •    12 photographs from source projects in ART 2220 and ART 3260
    •    A contact sheet book

    Portfolio submission for entrance into the photography program is normally in the last semester of the sophomore year.

Graduate Courses

The Masters of Fine Arts (MFA) requires 60 credits and normally takes three years to complete. The MFA is the terminal professional degree in studio art. The graduate program has a maximum enrollment of six students. Private and semiprivate darkroom space, a shared office space and access to a Mac platform digital lab are provided. The MFA is a rigorous program that develops the students’ creative process and intellectual inquiry manifesting in a mature body of work. The program offers students a unique opportunity to be involved in the design of their own program within the photography concentration. There is ample opportunity to work with faculty in the areas of both wet and digital photo-based media. Crossover of media is encouraged. Risk taking becomes a priority. The required thesis consists of a creative exhibition, a written report on the exhibition, an oral defense and a comprehensive examination.
