2009 - 2010
First Annual Outdoor
Sculpture Exhibition

The Coastal Carolina Regional Airport, in partnership with the Sculpture Area at East Carolina University and the Craven Arts Council is pleased to present our first Sculpture Exhibition. This event is part of a National "Art in the Airport" program, designed to enhance the travel experience of our customers. ECU students were given the assignment of creating sculptures addressing the theme of "flight."  A jury, including Airport Director Tom Braaten, viewed many models and selected eight pieces to be created for the show.  These eight sculptures will be at the Airport for approximately one year. One of them will be purchased by the Airport to become a part of their Public Art collection.  We hope you enjoy viewing these wonderful sculptures.

Pegasus
Steel, Iron
7'x6'x8'
$1,200.00“Pegasus” reminds us what an amazing accomplishment flight really is. This particular rendition of Pegasus represents a manmade structure that also holds a certain amount of magic and wonder; the airplane. It is a tribute to mankind's amazing accomplishment in achieving the ability to fly.

campbell

Justin Campbell “Energy”, 2009, Steel, Aluminum, Sand, 3’6”x4’x7’6”, $2600.00
“Energy” reminds us that humans are a tremendous species with an impressive collective of knowledge and power. However, as is natural, we have a dark side to our progress. My work is a direct emotional interpretation of the underlying ways in which progress has had a negative affects on our environment and the human condition.

cochran

Abigail Cochran “The Travelers Three”, 2009, Steel, 2’6”x2’6”x9’6”  Sold
“The Travelers Three” is an indirect reference to flight as portrayed by seeds being whisked away by the wind, poised to begin travels of their own.

Dudders

James R Dudley “Around The Form”, 2009, Steel, 3’x3’x8’, $1200.00
“Around The Form” is a visual interpretation of wind passing over a form creating volume and movement, with lines representative of longitude and latitude arching over the sail.

Plankers

Veronica Plankers “Air Sell”, 2009, Steel, 4’x2’x8’, $1200.00
“Air Sell” represents rudimentary paper airplanes in an increasingly unified formation.

stowe

Garrett Stowe “Tailwind”, 2009, Steel,  5’x2’x8’, $1600.00
“Tailwind” is a tribute to modern aircraft technology. By deriving inspiration from classic aeronautical propulsion such as propeller driven aircraft and combining them with modern jet turbines, the result is a kinetically powered faux engine, which indicates wind speed and direction.

white

Eric Justin White “Interconnected”, Steel, 4’x3’x8’, $1800.00
“Interconnected” seeks to represent air travel as a conduit for human connection. The vertical arching forms represent two distinct locations or groups of people. The red arching lines mimics flight paths of airplanes, and represent the connection created between the two points.
