Students seeking BFA and MFA degrees in studios arts have the option to concentrate in textiles. They study a variety of fabric printing/dying/surface embellishment techniques as well as a number of multi-harness weaving processes. Specialty classes in portfolio formation, felting, encaustic and fashion design are also offered giving the students a wide range of experiences during their tenure at ECU. The strength of the program is the ability to offer students traditional technique along with the opportunity to explore their individual creativity, cross boundaries and create contemporary/cutting edge work. We are dedicated to developing the program to include a greater emphasis on digital design and multi-media opportunities through collaboration with other areas within the school including our annual fashion show with AIMO (Apparel Merchandising and Interior Design). It is not unusual for students to concentrate in more than one area of study and this mixed-media approach to work is both encouraged and supported by the textiles faculty.
ECU BFA students have gone to continue their studies in higher education and have secured design positions in such companies as Nike, Disney and Abercrombie & Fitch. Our MFA students are making their own contributions to higher academia and continue their dedication to developing and making their work. Their art is exhibited widely and has been acknowledged through numerous awards. Our alumni continue to be participants not only in the realm of the fiberarts but productive individuals in the greater community as well.
Two nationally and internationally exhibited artists, Christine Zoller and Robin Haller, teach the courses offered in the program. In addition, MFA candidates have the opportunity through teaching assistantships to be the teacher of record for beginning classes and gain highly valued teaching experience to carry with them into future opportunities. In addition, students are exposed to numerous renowned teachers and instructors with both national and international reputations through guest artists programs.
