For nearly a century, East Carolina University has served the people of North Carolina and the nation. From modest beginnings as a teacher training school, East Carolina has grown to become an emerging, national research university with an enrollment of almost 22,000 students.
East Carolina formed the College of Human Ecology in July 2003 to underscore the university’s commitment to improving quality of life in eastern North Carolina and beyond. The college comprises the former School of Human Environmental Sciences and the former Carolyn Freeze Baynes School of Social Work and Criminal Justice Studies. Today, our programs continue the long and proud traditions both schools have established.
The Department of Child Development and Family Relations offers the only academic child life program in North Carolina and developed the first medical family therapy doctoral program in the nation. We maintain a family therapy clinic as part of the family therapy training program – the only such combination in North Carolina.
