Internal Medicine Services

General Medical Units

Vidant Medical Center serves a primarily under-served, racially diverse population, as well as a mixture of hospital and university employees and their families. Our patients serve as our greatest resource by providing a wide variety of disease processes and pathology from which to learn.

Our department is committed to following the ACGME duty hour regulations while maximizing the learning experience for residents on call. Interns will never do more than 16 hours in a row within the 12+4 hour rule. Upper-level residents who are "post call" after an overnight in-house call are relieved of duties the following day within the 24+6 hour rule. Residents are allowed to alternate weekend responsibilities so that they average at least one day out of seven out of the hospital. Our ICU night float rotation is also designed to comply with the duty hour policy. We have many non-teaching inpatient medicine teams staffed only by hospitalists to comply with RRC-IM admission limits. The department provides primary medical care for the residents of the local Golden Living facility on MacGregor Downs Road. Golden Living Center’s 72,000-square-foot facility houses 152 residents.
