Welcome to the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Brody School of Medicine, East Carolina University. Our faculty, residents and staff are committed to helping our patients regain their optimal level of functioning after illness or injury.
Our clinical services are offered in the following locations:
The EMG/Ultrasound machine allows residents, medical students, and patients to fully appreciate both the structure and function of the peripheral nervous system. Similar to the way an EKG and an echocardiogram allow a better understanding of heart pathology than either modality alone, incorporating neuromuscular ultrasound into an electrodiagnostic consultation allows a much better understanding of neuromuscular disorders such as carpal tunnel syndrome and ALS. This in turn results in better treatments and better outcomes for patients.
Neuromuscular ultrasound is a rapidly growing field and is now both a residency requirement and a topic that is tested on PM&R self-assessment examinations. The Department of Physical Medicine at Brody School of medicine is a nationally recognized leader in this field with multiple ongoing research projects and peer-reviewed publications on this topic.
