Project Description: The purpose of this ongoing project is to foster and develop in emerging health care professionals an understanding and appreciation of cultural and community diversity, leadership skills, involvement in community engagement and a deeper understanding of the occupational and health care issues faced in rural North Carolina. By the end of the first year at East Carolina University, these future medical and allied health professionals will be better prepared to serve the health care needs of Latino migrant farm workers and other clients in rural Eastern North Carolina. In addition, these students will have served about 1000 hours combined in Academic Service Learning with this project and will have identified and begun to develop necessary leadership skills in order to instigate and pursue community development initiatives and effectively serve the communities of this region.
