The East Carolina University College of Allied Health Sciences is proud to offer the following graduate and undergraduate scholarships.

New Scholarship!
College of Allied Health Sciences Patriot Scholarship

The purpose of this fund is to create and build a scholarship program that will further the College of Allied Health Sciences’ strategic direction in enhancing opportunities for leadership development.  This scholarship will provide financial support to an undergraduate or graduate student enrolled in any department of the College of Allied Health Sciences.   The applicant must be a military member or veteran, or the spouse or child of a military member or veteran.  The award will be based on academic strength, leadership capability and the potential to contribute to a profession in the field of allied health sciences.  Click here for more information and the application.

Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions Scholarship

The Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions sponsors a scholarship program for allied health students enrolled in member schools such as ECU. The purpose of the scholarship program is to recognize outstanding students in the allied health professions who are achieving excellence in their academic programs and have significant potential to assume future leadership roles in the allied health professions. Candidates must be enrolled in a school which is a ASAHP member, such as ECU, have successfully completed at least one term and enrolled in a health discipline and a career entry-level granting program, where financial need is not a criterion for eligibility. You must demonstrate qualities used to differentiate yourself from others such as academic merit, leadership, and extracurricular activities. Scholarship is valued at $1000. Berbecker Foundation Fellowship in Health Sciences

This scholarship is offered to a graduate student who has been accepted for admission or who is enrolled full-time at the ECU College of Allied Health Sciences. Criteria include a minimum 3.0 GPA as well as a demonstrated commitment to the Allied Health Sciences and a career in the allied health science field.  Click here for more information and the application. 

Gravely Foundation Scholarship - College of Allied Health Sciences

Candidates shall maintain a GPA of 3.0 or better, and be either a junior, senior or graduate student who has been accepted for admission and who is currently enrolled full-time in the College of Allied Health Sciences at East Carolina University.  Click here for more information and the application.

ECU Medical & Health Sciences Foundation Scholarship 

 

The ECU Medical & Health Sciences Foundation Scholarship will be offered for the academic year 2009-2010. The award is valued up to $1500 (Half in fall and other half in spring). Awarded to full time junior, senior and graduate students enrolled in the College of Allied Health Sciences, it honors recipients with at least a 3.0 GPA who have contributed significantly to the community. Preference will be given to those who intend to work in eastern North Carolina.

 

Applications are due by 5:00 pm April 15. Send electronically to Susie Harris, College of Allied Health Sciences, harrissus@ecu.edu. Please send as a completed packet with the application, two letters of reference from community representatives who discuss your service, and a personal statement.


Clinical Laboratory Science

W. James & Susan T. Smith Student Scholarship

For senior CLSC majors who will be entering clinical rotations the subsequent Fall Semester.  Application deadline is April 1st of each year.

This scholarship honors two faculty members who contributed to the education of CLSC students over the past 40 years. Dr W. James Smith taught cell physiology and biochemistry in the Department of Biology from 1966 to 1999. Many CLSC students had their introduction to structures of amino acids, DNA, and all those biochemical pathways in his class. He died of cancer in December 2003.

Dr Susan T. Smith was faculty member and chair of the CLSC department from 1972 until 2001. She, Mrs. Madge Chamness, and Mr. Frank Rabey were the core faculty that were responsible for developing and guiding the CLSC program during those years. Dr. Susan Smith was also a biochemist and taught clinical chemistry, immunology & serology, and laboratory information systems in the program.

It is Susan Smith’s hope that this scholarship will keep the memories of these faculty members alive and help a CLSC student through the long summer of classes before the clinical year begins.

American Society for Clinical Pathology Student Scholarship

In a continuing effort to draw young people into the laboratory profession, the ASCP is offering $1,000 scholarships to outstanding students enrolled in their final clinical year of study in Cytotechnologist (CT), Histologic Technician (HT), Histotechnologist (HTL), Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), or Medical Technologist (MT) programs. To be eligible for the ASCP Scholarship Program, an applicant must be enrolled in a NAACLS or CAAHEP accredited laboratory science program, in the final clinical year of education, and either a United States citizen or a permanent resident. You also must have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale. Scholarship selection criteria include academic achievement, leadership abilities, professional goals, and endorsements from faculty and community leaders. North Carolina Society for Clinical Laboratory Science Scholarship

The North Carolina Society for Clinical Laboratory Science offers two $1000 scholarships each academic year to students in the professional phase of either a BS or AS program in Clinical Laboratory Science. Application materials are distributed to program directors each Spring around the middle of April. The award recipients are selected during the summer and notified. Health Services and Information Management

Peggy H. Wood Scholarship

The scholarship is established in honor of Mrs. Peggy Wood, former chair of the Health Information Management Department within the East Carolina University College of Allied Health Sciences, who retired in 1996. Mrs. Peggy Wood had a profound influence in the field of health information management and served this field at both the state and national levels, as state president in 1974 and national president in 1985. She was instrumental in the founding of the Assembly on Education and chaired ECU's department of health information management for 26 years. This scholarship, honoring her tradition of service and excellence, is awarded annually to a deserving student who demonstrates a commitment to the health information profession. The scholarship is valued up to $1000 and is awarded to a junior with a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA and demonstrates a commitment to the health information profession. The AHIMA Foundation

The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) Foundation offers merit scholarships to outstanding undergraduate students pursuing degrees in health information administration and health information technology. Scholarships are also available to credentialed health information management (HIM) professionals pursuing graduate degrees to further their careers in HIM.

Scholarships range from $1,000 to $5,000 and are awarded based on assessment of the following criteria: grade point average and academic achievement, volunteer and work experience, commitment to the HIM profession, suitability to the HIM profession, quality and suitability of references provided, clarity of application.

At the time of application, students must be members of AHIMA accepted for enrollment in an approved program of study. Applicants must be taking a minimum six hours per semester or eight hours per quarter in pursuit of a degree and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0. The Foundation also offers educational loans to AHIMA members pursuing degrees in HIM or certificates in coding specialist programs affiliated with regionally accredited colleges or universities. NCHIMA Scholarship

The North Carolina Health Information Management Association awards scholarships each spring to rising seniors in academic programs in health information management. The program receives information about this scholarship in February or March of the junior year and applications are due prior to spring break. Students in all health information administration and health information technology programs in the state of North Carolina are eligible.

HealthPort Scholarship

The purpose of the scholarship is to assist deserving students majoring in Health Information Management, who meet the merit-based criteria deemed appropriate by the scholarship committee of the Department of Health Services and Information Management.  Scholarships shall be given annually, with the amount being determined by the Foundation and the department.

Communication Sciences and Disorders

ECU Chapter of the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association Scholarship

Scholarship value is $250 - $500 and is awarded to undergraduate (junior, senior) and graduate students who are members of the ECU Chapter of the National Student Speech-Language-Hearing Association (NSSLHA). Applications are available in the early spring and scholarships are typically awarded in May at the year-end meeting of the ECU Chapter of NSSLHA. A written statement or essay is also required. Typically, four scholarships are awarded annually although the value and number are determined annually based on the funds raised by the student group during the academic year.

Sexton Audiology Scholarship

The scholarship has been established by John E. Sexton, a graduate of the East Carolina University Audiology Master's Program, in support of the graduate students in Audiology who work diligently for two or three years of their lives to enter this most rewarding profession. The award is also an expression to the East Carolina University Faculty in the Communication Sciences and Disorders Department, past and present, for the support and encouragement given to John Sexton as a student and a member of the profession. The scholarship is valued at $1,000 and is awarded to a graduate student on the basis of academic merit and financial need. Applications are available each Fall semester and are due to Mr. Sexton in January. The Scholarship is awarded each year at the banquet held on the last day of the annual ECU National Student Speech-Language-Hearing Association Symposium which is typically held in February. Tanya Johnson McDowell & Riley Floyd Scholarship

The purpose of this scholarship is to provide support to a graduate student who is pursuing a master's degree in the clinical practice of speech-language pathology.  the recipient will meet certain criteria, as determined by the Chair of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, to include; financial need, GPA, a recommendation from a member of the faculty, and interview by the Department Chair or faculty member in the area of speech-language pathology.


Occupational Therapy

Jessica King Memorial Scholarship in Occupational Therapy Fund

Jessica King was a second year graduate student in the Occupational Therapy Program with a keen interest in older adults.  A friend to all her classmates and faculty members, it was a loss to everyone when Jessica passed away suddenly on August 29, 2005 at the age of 26.  In order to carry on her wish to improve the lives of older adults, friends, family, and faculty members  have worked with Jessica’s mother, Linda King, and Jessica’s sister, Jennifer, to establish a scholarship fund.

The fund will provide scholarship support for students enrolled in the Department of Occupational Therapy at East Carolina and who are pursuing occupational therapy careers in gerontology.

American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA)
American Occupational Therapy Foundation (AOTF)

The American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) and the American Occupational Therapy Foundation (AOTF) offers over 90 scholarships from the AOTF Scholarship Foundation Fund and State Association funds administered by the Foundation. To be eligible, students must be enrolled in an occupational therapy program, a member of AOTA, demonstrate a need for financial assistance, have a record of scholastic ability, and complete the application with supporting documentation. Louise O. Burevitch Scholarship in Occupational Therapy

The purpose of this scholarship, valued up to $1000 annually, is to provide financial support to a student or students enrolled in the Department of Occupational Therapy in the College of Allied Health Sciences at ECU, who meet the following criteria:
1.
Demonstrated commitment to the study of and to a career in occupational therapy
2. Demonstrated commitment to assist in the research in older adult driving
3. Any other criteria determined appropriate by the Department of Occupational Therapy


Physician Assistant Studies

American Academy of Physician Assistants

Since 1989, this program has awarded over $ 1 million to deserving PA students across the country. Any student member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants who is attending an ARC-PA-accredited PA program and is in the professional phase of his or her program is eligible to apply. Scholarships are awarded based on the availability of funds provided through contributions from AAPA members, individuals, and corporations. Previous PA Foundation scholarship recipients are NOT eligible to apply. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of financial need, academic achievement, extracurricular activities, and future goals as a PA. Deadline: February 1.

Bunting Scholarship

Louise O. Burevitch Scholarship in Physician Assistant Studies

The purpose of this scholarship, valued up to $1000 annually, is to provide financial support to a student or students enrolled in the Department of Physician Assistant Studies in the College of Allied Health Sciences at ECU, who meet the following criteria:
1.
Demonstrated commitment to the physician assistant studies program
2. Demonstrated desire to pursue a career as a physician assistant in eastern North Carolina
3. Any other criteria determined appropriate by the Department of Physician Assistant Studies

George Hamilton Physical Therapy Scholarship

The scholarship is established through the generous contributions of the Physical Therapy Professional Society, friends, and colleagues of Professor George F. Hamilton, former Chairman of the Department of Physical Therapy, within the School of Allied Health Sciences. The purpose of the scholarship is to assist deserving students majoring physical therapy who meet academic merit requirements. Two scholarships valued up to $500 (one half each semester) are awarded to second-year students who are enrolled full-time in the Department of Physical Therapy at East Carolina University. A grade point average of at least 3.5 for the first year of the DPT program is required.
Criteria:
-Performance in the DPT curriculum 
-Demonstrated commitment to the study of and a career in Physical Therapy
-Written narratives in response to two questions provided

Catherine Virginia McCulley Memorial Scholarship

The scholarship was established by Carolyn C. and Michael D. McCulley, of New Bern, North Carolina, in honor of their daughter, Catherine Virginia McCulley, who was an outstanding graduate student and received her master's degree in ECU Exercise Physiology, and was tragically killed in an automobile accident in April 1993.
Amount: Scholarship is valued up to $1500 (one half each semester)

-Minimum of a 3.0 undergraduate GPA / 3.5 graduate GPA

Rehabilitation Studies Majors

Jennifer Elizabeth "Beth" Lambeth Memorial Scholarship

The scholarship is offered in memory of Beth Lambeth, through contributions made by friends and Mr. Woody Lambeth. The scholarship is awarded to a deserving student in the Department of Rehabilitation Studies based on meeting the qualification and selection criteria, student nomination, and faculty approval. The award is valued up to $500.

Graduate Rehabilitation Literary Awards

The purpose of this award is to encourage the writing of professional literature among graduate students preparing themselves to work professionally with people with disabilities and who wish to facilitate professional communication among all rehabilitation personnel. It is sponsored by the National Rehabilitation Association, with special assistance from its professional divisions in rehabilitation counseling and vocational evaluation. Annual awards vary between $75 and $300 and are awarded based on merit and review. Other criteria apply. Contact the Department of Rehabilitation Studies for additional information.

Navy Health Services Collegiate Program

GRADUATE STUDENTS RECEIVE INCOME DURING GRADUATE SCHOOL Covering the cost of graduate school can be challenging. Tuition, books, supplies and Living expenses. But there is an easier way.

Navy Health Services Collegiate Program (HSCP) - Depending on your specialty, you can potentially receive a monthly salary and housing allowance from $2,940 to $5,150 while finishing your degree.  This program is offered to students in Masters or Doctoral Programs studying Audiology, Health Services/Information Management and Physician Assistant.

The Navy also offers soon-to-be graduates up to $80,000.00 of Health Professions Loan Repayment for only three years of obligation for the following professions: Physician Assistant, Occupational Therapy, Audiology and Health Services.

The Albemarle Hospital Volunteer Services, Inc

The Albemarle Hospital Volunteer Services, Inc. of Elizabeth City, North Carolina has approved several scholarships which are available for full-time college students in the Allied Health Field or in Medical School. Candidates must live in one of the six following counties: Gates, Perquimans, Pasquotank, Dare, Currituck, or Camden. Two $3,000 scholarships will be awarded annually to full-time college students already admitted to a health field program. Included in such health fields would be Physical Therapy, Pharmacy, Nursing, Speech Pathology, Sports Medicine and others closely related. One $5,000 Medical Scholarship will be awarded to a student already admitted to medical school. The three scholarships will be awarded in the Spring. Deadline for application is April 1 of each calendar year.

Glaxo Wellcome Opportunity Scholarship

In 1988, Burroughs Wellcome Co. (now Glaxo Wellcome Inc. headquartered in Research Triangle Park) made a significant gift to its home community by creating what is now known as Glaxo Wellcome Opportunity Scholarship Fund. Administered by the Triangle Community Foundation, this scholarship offers residents of Durham, Orange, Chatham, or Wake County who have overcome significant adversity, the opportunity to pursue their dreams and improve their lives through education and training. It may be applied toward books or materials not covered by other financial aid. This scholarship may be received for up to four years at up to $5000 per year. Shaver-Hitchings Scholarship

The Shaver-Hitchings Scholarship fund was created in 1990 by Dr. George H. Hitchings and Dr. Joyce Shaver Hitchings for the purpose of honoring and rewarding individuals with a commitment to helping others in the area of drug and alcohol addiction. Valued at $1500 the scholarship may be applied toward tuition, fees, and required books or materials not covered by other financial aid. Applicants must reside in Durham, Orange, or Wake counties and be enrolled or planning to attend Graduate School, a Physicians Assistant program, or Medical School. Other criteria also apply. Graduate Research Fellowship/Assistantship

Several graduate students each year are selected to assist the department's faculty in research and special projects. These are usually very rewarding projects and may lead to ideas and possible data for the student's required thesis or Master of Science Project. The amount of money the fellowship/assistantship provides each semester varies. Students are selected on the basis of their abilities and background. Apply in the Department of CSDI, Occupational Therapy, or Rehabilitation Studies as it applies to your major.

North Carolina Student Loan Program for Health, Science & Mathematics

In an effort to increase the number of health, science and mathematics professionals, the North Carolina General Assembly appropriates funds for student loans. These funds are administered by the NC Student Loan Program for Health, Science and Mathematics (HSM), a department of the North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority. Financial assistance is provided to qualified loan applicants to help them attain their educational and professional goals. The subsequent employment of these program participants in health care shortage areas, state facilities or educational institutions benefit our citizens by enhancing the State's health care delivery system and educational institutions.
