Services
The Academic Support and Enrichment Services (ASES) is within the School of Medicine and is dedicated to your academic and personal development. The primary mission of ASES is maximizing the academic success, personal development, and graduation of all medical, nursing, and allied health science students. To achieve this mission the staff of ASES recruits and supports pre-medical, pre-health sciences, and pre-nursing students at the undergraduate level and provides group and individual counseling for students on a variety of topics related to personal and academic development. ASES serves as a change agent and as a resource for addressing issues of diversity.
Academic Development
Academic Development services include individual and/or small group assessment and interventions related to:
- Academic and performance anxiety
- Time management
- Study and test taking skills
- Anxiety reduction
- Stress management
- Psychoeducational workshops
- Licensure preparation
- Learning and cognitive development
Personal Development
Personal development services include individual, couple, or small group assessments and interventions related to:
- Lifestyle management
- Communication skills
- Multicultural awareness
- Career counseling
Outreach
Secondary and middle school students are provided with opportunities to increase their knowledge of health science careers, medical education, and the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University through:
- Tours of the medical school
- Skill enhancement workshops
- Career development
Recruitment
The ASES staff recruits students who are interested in pursuing medical education with an emphasis on the recruitment of minority and disadvantaged students by:
- Attending graduate and professional school fairs in North Carolina to assist students in their preparation for and application to medical school
- Providing psychoeducational programs to pre-health student organizations to help strengthen their academic performance
Books / Materials Loan Service
ASES maintains a textbook and supplemental reference library as well as a vast assortment of MCAT preparation and review materials. These items can be checked out on a daily, weekly, monthly or semester basis free of charge.
