The Huffman Award
Established in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Huffman, this award of merit is presented annually to the first year student who has demonstrated the highest level of academic achievement and personal stature throughout the year.
The Vivian Neal Barnes Memorial Award
Established in memory of the mother of Dr. Donald W. Barnes of the Department of Pharmacology, this award is given annually to the outstanding student in the pharmacology course in the School of Medicine.
The Edgar T. Beddingfield, Jr. Family Practice Award
The Department of Family Medicine presents this award annually to the member of the graduating class who best demonstrates the characteristics most compatible with the philosophy of family medicine as judged by scholarship and interpersonal relationships.
The Frank H. Longino Award
The Department of Surgery presents this award annually to a graduating senior for excellence in the application of clinical judgment and scientific principles to the study and care of patients.
The Philip G. Nelson Award
Established in honor of the first psychiatrist in eastern North Carolina, this award is presented annually to the graduating student who has demonstrated superiority in establishing a patient-physician relationship and excellence in scholarship on the psychiatric medicine service.
The William E. Laupus Pediatric Award
This award is presented to the senior student whose overall performance in pediatrics best demonstrates excellence in scholarship, the possession of consummate clinical skills and a genuine concern for the health care needs of children.
The Department of Radiology Award
Presented annually by the Department of Radiology, this award recognizes a graduating senior for excellence in radiology.
The Janet M. Glasgow Memorial Award
The American Medical Women’s Association presents this award and Achievement Citations to women medical students graduating as top scholars in their class.
The Ruth Carson Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Award
This award is presented annually by the department to a graduating student in recognition of superior academic achievement.
The Wilhelm R. Frisell Research Award
Presented by the faculty of the Department of Biochemistry, this award goes to a graduating senior who has best exemplified basic research as an important component of medical education during his or her medical school years.
The Lange Student Awards
These awards are presented to two members of the first year class who, through their dedication and hard work in the classroom and in contributions to their classmates and school, represent the health care professionals of the future.
The Eastern North Carolina American Medical Women’s Association Malene G. Irons Award
This award is presented each year to a senior medical student who has been active in school and community extracurricular activities and who particularly demonstrates an interest and involvement in issues concerning women and children.
The Jacob Furth Student Research Prize
Awarded annually by the Department of Medicine, this prize is given to the medical student who has conducted a significant research project while in medical school.
The Merck Manual Awards
These awards are presented to two third-year medical students who have demonstrated dedication to their pursuit of medicine as a career by their involvement and leadership in the School of Medicine and/or in medical organizations.
The Faculty Award
This award is presented annually to the graduating senior who best demonstrates excellence in basic and clinical sciences and exhibits those qualities which personify the complete physician. The recipient is selected by the fulltime faculty in all departments of the medical school.
The George Podgorny Award
The Department of Emergency Medicine presents this award to a graduating senior for achievement, excellence and dedication to the discipline of emergency medicine.
The Society of Academic Emergency Medicine - Excellence in Emergency Medicine Award
This award is presented to a graduating senior who has demonstrated excellence in the specialty of emergency medicine.
The Medical Humanities Award
This award is presented to the graduating senior who has excelled in the medical humanities course and demonstrated an interest in the medical humanities.
The Department of Microbiology and Immunology Award
This award is presented to a graduating senior for highest academic achievement in that discipline.
The Dowdy Student Store Award
This award is presented to a third-year student in recognition of their high academic achievement.
The Andrew A. Best Award for Excellence
This award is presented to the senior student who best exemplifies all around excellence in academics and human relations.
The Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA)
Honor Medical Society Students are selected in their third or fourth year for membership in the Brody School of Medicine Chapter of Alpha Omega Alpha. Criteria for selection include academic excellence, community service and the potential for significant contributions to the medical profession.
