Students who matriculate at East Carolina University and enter the Brody School of Medicine must complete a health form and immunization certification and are required to obtain personal health insurance coverage that meets minimum standards set by the medical school. This must be continued throughout the student’s tenure in school. All students are enrolled in the disability insurance program offered by the school. Each year a health update form is required prior to beginning a new academic year.
The Brody School of Medicine has a Student Health and Effectiveness Committee (SHEC) whose purpose is to provide assessment and early intervention for students who could potentially be impaired by substance abuse or emotional or psychological concerns. The SHEC functions confidentially through peer identification of problems, student-to-student counseling and determination of appropriate intervention and treatment as needed.
Administrative or academic changes due to health problems are decided by the Dean for Student Affairs on an individual basis. Changes in the academic program or a medical leave of absence are options to accommodate a student who has a health-related or personal problem.
