YOUR WRITING PROJECT: ORGANIZING AN INTRODUCTION

November 1, 2007
12:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Brody 3E-120 A & B

Patrick Bizzaro, PhD
Professor

Aristotle calls the first stage of the writing process the "invention" stage. Invention can be done in a variety of ways, some more appropriate to discovering a subject than others; still other methods are more appropriate for contemplating the scope of a writing project. This workshop will present participants with various ways of getting started with their writing.

Objectives
Upon completion of this session participants will be able to:

  • Explore their topic using focused free writing
  • Explore the subject by brainstorming a list
  • Explore the relationships between parts of their topic by using a diagram
  • Analyze their audience
  • Identify audience characteristics, objectives, and needs
  • Differentiate the requirements of their intended audience from those of the shadow audience
  • State their purpose for writing, including the "need" for their article
  • Incorporate reading in the writing process
  • Understand three uses of "writer-based" prose
  • Recognize signals that indicate when a text had become "reader-based"

Preparation
Participants should come prepared to sample various approaches to invention and determine for themselves which approach best helps them explore the scope of their topic. If participants do not yet have a specific topic in mind, several invention techniques designed to help discover a topic will be introduced.

Participation is limited. To participate, please complete and submit the Workshop Registration Form or contact the Office of Academic and Faculty Development at 744-3420.
