In this workshop, participants will study several scientific articles and then derive from them principles underlying their organization. Guidelines will be developed for use by participants in their own writing. As time permits and participant interest warrants, peer groups will be established to review documents brought in by participants. These groups may be ongoing.
Objectives
By the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Use outlining for purposes of arranging information
- Indicate relative importance in sentences, paragraphs, and entire documents
- Write four kinds of sentences
- Employ verbal rather than nominal style
- Differentiate the technical paragraph from non-technical paragraphs
- Use headings, topic sentences, and summary paragraphs
- Support major and minor paragraphs sufficiently
- Use four types of paragraph structures
- Know when to number paragraphs, as in much scientific and technical writing, and when not to
Preparation
This workshop will be of use to both those who have begun an article and those who would like to master general principles. In either case, participants should come to this workshop ready to practice specific principles leading to the organization of any kind of writing they may do on the job. Bring either the article you're working on or an article you believe to be well written from a journal you routinely read.
Participation is limited. To participate, please complete the Workshop Registration Form or contact the Office of Academic and Faculty Development at 744-3420.
