YOUR WRITING PROJECT: USE OF ILLUSTRATIONS AND DATA DISPLAYS

January 10, 2008
12:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Brody 3E-120 A & B

Patrick Bizzaro, PhD
Professor
Department of English
East Carolina University

When should an illustration or a data display be placed in a document? Where should it go? How much discussion should precede or follow an illustration or a data display? Articles and book chapters employing these aids will be studied during this workshop, and specific guidelines will be developed for use by participants in the writing they will do.

Objectives
Participants will learn how to:

  • Determine and adapt to style requirements of individual journals
  • Employ white space effectively
  • Use illustrations (photographs, renderings, line drawings, icons) appropriate to the author's purpose and the readers' needs
  • Use data displays (tables, charts, graphs, diagrams) appropriate to the author's purpose and readers' needs
  • Integrate data displays with text
  • Write captions for illustrations and data displays
  • Format and design documents based on audience, purpose and subject scope

Preparation
Specific examples of the various uses to which illustrations and data displays may be put will be used to enable participants in this workshop to leave with a solid set of guidelines they may use with their own writing. Those working on articles may spend time generating guidelines for use with the articles they have already begun. Participants able to do so, then, should come with their articles and some notion of what kinds of additional elements they would like to add to their articles to reinforce specific kinds of content. Those not currently at work in writing an article should bring with them an article they believe effectively employs illustration and data displays.

Participation is limited. To participate, please complete the Workshop Registration Form or contact the Office of Academic and Faculty Development at 744-3420.
