Magazines in the medical sciences, as in all other fields, require careful documentation of materials. This workshop will focus on the documentation style used most often in the medical sciences with some time spent in discussion of acceptable variations and options in using particular styles.
Objectives
Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to:
- Identify various legal principles of medical writing
- Discuss seven potential sources of unethical conduct in medical writing
- Define plagiarism
- Recognize four situations in which they need to document sources
- Identify standard information to include in referencing articles from journal to journal
- Employ testimony effectively
- Define common knowledge
- Define authorship and acknowledgement
- Develop a position in regard to the ethics of multiple submissions
- Review some elements of a cover letter
- Define and avoid self plagiarism
- Define salami slicing and avoid it in their own research writing
- Take an ethical position in regard to duplicate publication
- Take an ethical position on conflict of interest
- Define intellectual property
Preparation
As with all workshops in this series, the session will be designed for both those who are working in an article and those who simply seek some insight into the day's subject. To that end, those working on an article should bring a copy of the journal to which they intend to submit their article and the article itself with the goal of making progress toward documenting materials correctly. Those not currently at work on an article should bring a journal they like to read or one to which they might in time wish to submit an essay. This journal, then, will serve as a foundation for developing guidelines for documentation.
Participation is limited. To participate, please complete and submit the Workshop Registration Form or contact the Office of Academic and Faculty Development at 744-3420.
