This workshop will explore models of clinical teaching that build on concepts of adult learning and feedback and provide a framework for efficient and effective clinical teaching. This session will examine methods for effectively gathering data on the learner's performance and making decisions regarding appropriate content and process for giving feedback in a manner that is constructive and non-threatening. The overall workshop goal is to implement a set of guidelines for clinical instruction based on a theory of learning and the realities of the clinical situation.
Objectives
Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to:
- Describe and discuss "The Learning Vector" theory of clinical instruction
- Analyze a vignette of one-on-one clinical interactions between attending physicians and medical students or residents
- Describe the techniques of "The One Minute Preceptor"
- Practice aspects of clinical teaching
- Contract for improvement of a specific aspect of clinical instruction
- Describe the characteristics of effective feedback
- Apply the characteristics in critique of simulated feedback encounter
- Organize a session on feedback for a learner
