Knowledge of clinical research methods is critical to faculty who will develop and/or participate in research projects at the Brody School of Medicine. This four-part series will provide the fundamentals of developing a research protocol including identifying and refining the research question, selecting the appropriate research study design, determining sample size and statistical power, and selecting and recruiting research participants. Participants will complete a research protocol by the end of the four sessions.

In the second session of this series, participants will present their refined research questions. We will discuss the content and development of the research protocol and strategies for conducting literature searches and developing and maintaining a project database. We will also present information on sample size calculations and selecting appropriate outcome measures.

Objectives
Following the presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the elements of a research protocol
  • Be familiar with literature review and database resources
  • Understand the basic concepts related to statistical power and sample size estimation
  • Be familiar with the techniques and resources for estimating sample size for different types of research questions
  • Identify various measurement scales

Participation is limited. To participate, please complete and submit the Workshop Registration Form or call the Office of Academic and Faculty Development at 744-3420.
