Knowledge of clinical research methods is critical to faculty who will develop and/or participate in research projects at the Brody School of Medicine. This four-part series will provide the fundamentals of developing a research protocol including identifying and refining the research question, selecting the appropriate research study design, determining sample size and statistical power, and selecting and recruiting research participants. Participants will complete a research protocol by the end of the four sessions.

The third session of the research series is designed to provide participants with an overview and comparison of clinical research study designs. Participants will work in groups to select the most appropriate design to answer their research question and will outline components of the methods section.

Objectives
Following the presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Contrast observational and experimental studies
  • Differentiate cross-sectional, case-control, and cohort studies and list one advantage and one disadvantage of each
  • List two techniques which can be used to minimize confounding/bias in observational studies
  • List the common design components of a clinical trial
  • Describe one method for simple randomization of subjects into two groups
  • Name two advantages of "double-binding" a clinical trial

Participation is limited. To participate, please complete and submit the Workshop Registration Form or call the Office of Academic and Faculty Development at 744-3420.
