MEDICAL WRITING SERIES
HOW TO WRITE A CASE REPORT

February 16, 2010
1:00p.m. - 4:30p.m.
Brody 2W-50, 2W-40B

Walter Pories, MD
Professor
Metabolic Institute
Brody School of Medicine

Most major medical discoveries begin with a single observation. The recognition of HIV, the introduction of immunization and the application of digitalis to treat heart disease were first shared with the world through case reports. This session reviews the essential components of a case report, i.e. a succinct report of the clinical event, a review of the relevant literature, a discussion of the implications of this finding as well as suggestions for additional observations and trials.

Please note, in preparation for the session, each student should prepare a case report, no longer than one page (arial font 11) that includes an 1) introduction, 2) the case or cases used as examples, 3) a discussion and 4) conclusion.

Objectives
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the critical components of a case report
  • Prepare a case report
  • Explain how to evaluate the validity and utility of case reports

Participation is limited. To participate, please complete and submit the Workshop Registration Form or call the Office of Academic and Faculty Development at 744-3420.
