External Grant Proposal Reviewer Service

The Division of Research and Graduate Studies and the Brody School of Medicine are offering a proposal review service. This service, funded by a gift from Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, provides honoraria to help faculty members obtain external experts to critique their proposals.

Mission
The mission of the External Grant Proposal Reviewer Service is to provide expert external guidance and advice to ECU faculty in the development of major grant applications.

Availability
Sufficient Funds are available to help about 40 faculty members obtain external review of their draft proposals.

Eligibility
Only financially signficiant (>$150,000) grant applications to sponsors that provide full F&A costs will be eligible. The PI must be an ECU faculty member.

Honorariums
$150 per external reviewer

External reviewers per proposal
2 maximum; the faculty member selects the external reviewers

Process

3-4 months prior to Proposal Due Date:
Faculty member requests the service from the program administrators and provides relevant information including name, department, project title, abstract, due date, prospective sponsor and amount to be requested. If accepted by the program, s/he will be told to contact and obtain commitments from two external experts to read their proposals.

Three weeks later:
Faculty member provides the names, institutions and contact information of the external reviewers to the Division’s administrator who obtains needed information for honorarium payments. Please fill out the appropriate form here.

About 2 months prior to Proposal Due Date:
Faculty member provides a draft proposal (preferably electronic) to the administrator who then sends them to the reviewers with appropriate institutional paperwork for honorarium payment.

About 1 month prior to Proposal Due Date:
Reviewers return comments to faculty member with copies to the Division administrator with completed paperwork. Honorarium checks are then mailed.
