Frank T. Stritter, PhD
Professor Emeritus
School of Medicine
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

This module will explore a model of clinical teaching that builds on a concept of adult learning. The module will also relate clinical teaching to generally accepted techniques of coaching football and recommend that some of the techniques are appropriate for the clinical setting. The module will also present clinical teaching in the format of organization of a day in an ambulatory care clinic setting, i.e., setting expectations at the beginning of a day, discussing patient care using "The One Minute Preceptor" approach and debriefing at the end of the day. Finally, the module will discuss giving feedback on performance in the clinical.

Upon completion of this module, participants will be able to:
  • Discuss a theory of clinical instruction
  • Relate clinical instruction to coaching
  • Implement a strategy for precepting in the clinical setting
  • Discuss an approach for giving feedback on performance
This module includes reading materials, a twenty-minute video presentation, and a post-test. It is estimated that it will require approximately 1 hour to complete this module.
