Visiting Medical Student Program

Visiting medical students desiring to take an elective at the Brody School of Medicine will be accommodated only if an elective application has been processed first through the Office of Student Affairs. Acceptance by a department or supervisor solely does not constitute approval for a visiting student elective. The Brody School of Medicine’s medical students have priority in registering for an elective.  

 
Eligibility Requirements
  • You are enrolled at an accredited medical school in the U.S. or Canada (Only schools listed on the Association of American Medical Colleges or Association of American Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine
  • You must be in your final year of medical school at the time of the elective.
  • You are in good academic standing at your medical school.
  • You have received the required immunizations.
  • You have completed education in Universal Precautions within 12 months of the start of the elective.
  • You are registered and paying tuition at your medical school.
  • You have verification of personal health and professional liability insurance coverage while participating in an elective at the Brody School of Medicine.
  • You have approval for participation in an elective at the Brody School of Medicine by the Dean of your medical school.
 
Elective Scheduling
  • You choose the dates that best fit your schedule.  Electives begin on a Monday and conclude on a Friday in full-week increments (with the exception of Holidays).
  • Electives are four weeks in length.  You will be limited to three 4-week electives while at the Brody School of Medicine.
  • Once you are confirmed for an elective, no changes in elective assignments are allowed.
  • There are no application fee or tuition charges for visiting medical student.
  • Submit application materials a minimum of six weeks prior to the start of the requested elective. 
  • A response will be mailed within six weeks.  We will begin to process Visiting Medical Students Applications in late May for the July 2008 to April 2009 academic year.
 
Completed applications must include:

OPTIONAL Documentation

  • Letter of Recommendation from a Clinical Faculty
  • Transcript from your Medical School
  • USMLE Step 1 Scores or COMPLEX
  • Curriculum Vitae

Please type or print clearly.  You will be notified via e-mail when your application has been received.  An official from the Dean's Office should complete the Verification of Medical School Information form.

Submit ALL materials to the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University, Office of Student Affairs, Brody 2S-20, Greenville, North Carolina 27834.  Please include your social security number on all forms and correspondence.  Processing of your application for a Visiting Medical Student Elective will not begin until ALL supporting documents are received.

The Brody School of Medicine students have priority in registering for electives.

 
Housing, Transportation & Meals

Housing is not available for visiting students, however students may contact our University Housing Office (252) 328-6450, and our Eastern AHEC Office (252) 744-5221, which may be able to assist you in affordable housing. You are responsible for making your own housing and transportation arrangements. As a visiting student, you may obtain meals at an affordable cost at the hospital cafeteria.

 
Grading and Evaluations

Visiting Students remain registered at their own school while they are at the Brody School of Medicine participating in the Visiting Medical Student Program. They are not officially enrolled as students at the Brody School of Medicine. Upon completion of an elective, a performance evaluation will be sent back to the student’s own school. You must provide a complete address of the person to whom your evaluation should be sent. Elective Scheduling You choose the dates that best fit your schedule.
