Animated Maps: Premature Mortality 1981 to 2001
Premature mortality is an aggregate measure of the years of life lost (YLL) by people who die before a target age living within an area and time period. The target age typically used is 75 years, which is a little less than the year 2000 US life expectancy at birth or 76.9 years.
In this map series, counties with higher rates of mortality at younger ages will contribute more YLL than counties with individuals dying later in life but prior to age 75.
In order to make comparisons among counties, it is necessary to adjust ages to a standard reference population (US 2000 Standard Million Population). The YLL rates are per 10,000 population.
This series includes seventeen maps for seventeen leading causes of mortality.
