Scholarships Available to CLSC Students
W. James & Susan T. Smith Student Scholarship
For senior CLSC majors who will be entering clinical rotations the subsequent Fall Semester. Application deadline is April 1st of each year.
This scholarship honors two faculty members who contributed to the education of CLSC students over the past 40 years. Dr W. James Smith taught cell physiology and biochemistry in the Department of Biology from 1966 to 1999. Many CLSC students had their introduction to structures of amino acids, DNA, and all those biochemical pathways in his class. He died of cancer in December 2003.
Dr Susan T. Smith was faculty member and chair of the CLSC department from 1972 until 2001. She, Mrs. Madge Chamness, and Mr. Frank Rabey were the core faculty that were responsible for developing and guiding the CLSC program during those years. Dr. Susan Smith was also a biochemist and taught clinical chemistry, immunology & serology, and laboratory information systems in the program.
It is Susan Smith’s hope that this scholarship will keep the memories of these faculty members alive and help a CLSC student through the long summer of classes before the clinical year begins.
American Society for Clinical Pathology Student Scholarship
In a continuing effort to draw young people into the laboratory profession, the ASCP is offering $1,000 scholarships to outstanding students enrolled in their final clinical year of study in Cytotechnologist (CT), Histologic Technician (HT), Histotechnologist (HTL), Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), or Medical Technologist (MT) programs. To be eligible for the ASCP Scholarship Program, an applicant must be enrolled in a NAACLS or CAAHEP accredited laboratory science program, in the final clinical year of education, and either a United States citizen or a permanent resident. You also must have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale. Scholarship selection criteria include academic achievement, leadership abilities, professional goals, and endorsements from faculty and community leaders. North Carolina Society for Clinical Laboratory Science Scholarship
The North Carolina Society for Clinical Laboratory Science offers two $1000 scholarships each academic year to students in the professional phase of either a BS or AS program in Clinical Laboratory Science. Application materials are distributed to program directors each Spring around the middle of April. The award recipients are selected during the summer and notified.
