Dr. Geralyn Crain is the Assistant Dean for Educational Support and Faculty Development at the East Carolina University School of Dental Medicine. Her office oversees the services available to students to support their advancement through the curriculum, and manages faculty development needs including tenure and promotion and continuing education for faculty and community dentists. Dr. Crain received her Bachelor of Science degree in physiology with a minor in Chinese Studies from the University of California, San Diego in 1987. She earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Washington School of Dentistry in Seattle, Washington in 1991. After seven years in private practice in Portland, Oregon, her hometown, Dr. Crain accepted a teaching position at the Oregon Health and Science University School of Dentistry where she directed the preclinical operative dentistry simulation clinic and supervised students in the junior and senior dental clinics. In 2004, Dr. Crain received a National Institute of Health T-32 Dentist-Scientist Award to pursue an interdisciplinary PhD through the University of Missouri, Kansas City School of Dentistry Department of Oral Biology and the Bloch School of Management, Cookingham School of Public Affairs and Administration. Her doctoral research was the qualitative analysis of organizational change in dental education. Dr. Crain and her husband, Mitch, have a daughter, Jacqueline, who is studying at the University of San Diego, and a young son, James.
