Biographical Information
Dr. Todd Watkins was born and raised in Gastonia, NC where he graduated in 1981 from Ashbrook High School. He went on to earn a BA in Psychology from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1985 , and, following a year of biomaterials and informatics research at the Dental Research Center, he received his DDS from UNC-Chapel Hill School of Dentistry in 1990. In 1990, Dr. Watkins worked in the Office of Educational Resources designing instructional software while completing the AEGD program at University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio School of Dentistry, where he remains an adjunct faculty member. Continuing his research in informatics and curriculum design, Dr. Watkins became a faculty member at UTHSCSA in Diagnostic Sciences and General Dentistry. In 1994, he performed a successful technology transfer of "Project Macinstein" from the University of Texas into a Delaware C Corporation called VitalSource Technologies. As President and CEO of VitalSource he guided the development and delivery of the first XML-based electronic book platform which is the core reference library for 18 dental schools. Prior to joining East Carolina University School of Dentistry, he served as a consultant to numerous dental, medical, and veterinary schools in course and curriculum implementation of technology and content. He has been married to Lisa for 22 years and has a daughter, Katie, and son, Alex.
