Steve Thompson (COL, DC, USA) retired from the US Army in 2012 to join the faculty at the ECU School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Thompson was born in Charlotte, NC, and received his BS in Zoology from NC State University. After completing the DDS & OMP programs at the Emory University SoD (1981), he taught Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, with Professor Mervyn Shear.
He entered the US Army in 1985, practicing pathology, teaching, and seeing clinical patients at DDEAMC, Fort Gordon, GA, and Tripler AMC, Hawaii until 2000. In 2004 he completed Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery training, and remained as staff at Ft. Gordon, GA until 2006. During this time he was deployed
to Bagram, Airfield, Afghanistan, as the Chief of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery with the 249th General Hospital. In 2008 he completed a two year surgical fellowship with Milton Waner, MD at the Vascular Birthmark Institute of NY in Manhattan.
His final military assignments were as the Integrated Chief for
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Walter Reed AMC and the National Naval MC-Bethesda, and the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on the Bethesda campus. He was stationed in Washington, DC from 2008-2012. During his professional career, he has authored numerous publications, held many committee and leadership positions, and is a diplomate of both the American Boards of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Pathology. Among his military honors and awards are the A proficiency designator, Bronze Star and Legion of Merit.
Dr. Thompson and his wife Madge live outside Winterville on a farm that was originally owned by her grandfather Dennis McLawhorn, and father Kenneth Dews, Sr. They have two adult children Ken, and Joanna.
