Selected Biographical Information
Dr. Stockstill serves as the Section Chief of Orthodontics within the Department of Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics.
Born and raised in New Iberia, Louisiana, Dr. Stockstill attended the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now University of Louisiana-Lafayette) (B.S. – Pre-Dentistry/Zoology) and Louisiana State University Health Science Center School of Dentistry (Doctor of Dental Surgery). Following graduation from dental school, he served for two years in the U.S. Public Health Service/U.S. Coast Guard as a staff dentist and received an honorable discharge in 1977. He then purchased a dental practice in Sunset, Louisiana and practiced 7 years as a general dentist. Dr. Stockstill then attended the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine as a Neuromuscular Research in Clinical Dentistry Fellow and completed his M.S. in Oral Sciences and Certificate in Temporomandibular Disorders/Orofacial Pain in 1987. He then joined the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry faculty as an assistant professor where he directed the curricula in Occlusion, Temporomandibular Disorders/Orofacial Pain and assisted in Fixed Prosthodontics. As part of the academic appointment, Dr. Stockstill also directed a five-state referral center for Temporomandibular Disorders/Orofacial Pain. Following his tenure and promotion to Associate Professor in 1994, Dr. Stockstill then entered the Orthodontic Residency at the UNMC College of Dentistry and received his Certificate in Orthodontics in 1996. Dr. Stockstill then joined the faculty of Creighton University School of Dentistry in 1996 and directed the undergraduate Orthodontic curriculum and the undergraduate Temporomandibular Disorders/Orofacial Pain curriculum until 2001, when he joined the Medical College of Georgia (now Georgia Health Sciences University) College of Dental Medicine as Director of Orthodontic Research and Director of undergraduate Orthodontic curriculum with a Joint Appointment in the Department of Oral Biology and Maxillofacial Pathology. Following a successful career at the College of Dental Medicine, Dr. retired from the CoDM in 2012 and joined the faculty of the ECU School of Dental Medicine as Section Chief of Orthodontics.
Dr. Stockstill currently serves as the Associate Editor of the American Journal of Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopedics in the areas of TMD and masticatory function, serves as the Chairman of the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) Special Interest Group for Temporomandibular Disorders/Orofacial Pain and is a founding member of the Association of University Temporomandibular Disorder/Orofacial Pain Programs (AUTOPP). He is past president of Omicron Kappa Upsilon (Kappa Lambda chapter) at the GHSU College of Dental Medicine, has edited, authored and co-authored numerous scientific journals and textbooks, holds patents for orthodontic instruments, and has presented orthodontic and TMD/Orofacial Pain related lectures at the local, regional and international levels. He is a Fellow in the Academy of General Dentistry, American College of Dentists, International College of Dentists, and Omicron Kappa Upsilon (Alpha-Alpha chapter) and is a Diplomate (Board certified) in the American Board of Orthodontics.
Dr. Stockstill and his wife Mary live in Winterville, NC. His son John Matthew holds M.S. and M.B.A. degrees from Georgia Southern University and is currently employed as a Training Specialist in Information Systems with East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine. His daughter Liz has completed her thesis in Communications and Public Relations at University of Louisiana-Lafayette and will graduate with an M.S. in Communications and Public Relations in December, 2012.
