Fifty-nine health sciences faculty recognized for published works

Fifty-nine East Carolina University health sciences faculty were honored April 2 for their published works at the 3rd annual Faculty Author Recognition Awards.
Works recognized included books, book chapters and peer-reviewed journal articles published between Sept. 1, 2006, and Dec. 31, 2007. A bibliography is available at www.ecu.edu/laupuslibrary/far.cfm.
"This event is designed to pay tribute to you, our valued colleagues, who have expanded and enriched the scholarly culture of our university and the research reputation of the Division of Health Sciences through your published works," said Dr. Dorothy Spencer, associate vice chancellor for communication and information resources and director of Laupus Library, which hosted a luncheon for the honorees.
Dr. Phyllis Horns, interim vice chancellor for health sciences and interim dean of the Brody School of Medicine, presented 11 book authors with a Laupus bronze, a special award named for the first dean of ECU's medical school, William E. Laupus.
Dr. Nicholas H. Benson, vice dean for the Brody School of Medicine, commended faculty for making time to publish in addition to their daily clinical and educational duties. Benson recognized 25 Brody School of Medicine faculty: Shaw Akula, Diana Antonacci, Yan-Hua Chen, Kim Dixon, Peggy Goodman, Donald Hoffman, Christy Isler, Timothy Johnson, Kathryn Kolasa, Isabelle Lamasson, Brian McMillen, Justin Moore, John Moskop, Barbara Muller-Borer, David Musick, Dale Newton, Lloyd Novick, Ronald Perkin, Walter Pories, Sy Saeed, Todd Savitt, Harmeet Singh, Ann Sperry, Robert Tanenberg and Kathryn Verbanac.
"We're recognizing the labor of love and creativity that has gone into this work," said Dr. Stephen Thomas, dean of the College of Allied Health Sciences. Thomas recognized 12 College of Allied Health Sciences faculty: Paul Bell, Martha Chapin, Anne Dickerson, Lloyd Goodwin Jr., Monica Hough, Walter Jenkins, Terry Jones, Elizabeth Layman, Nathalie Mizelle, Timothy Reistetter, Shari Sias and Mark Stebnicki.
"Everybody is busy with research, teaching and service," said Dr. Sylvia Brown, acting dean of the College of Nursing. "We appreciate the efforts that you've taken."
Brown, who also published, recognized 22 faculty in the College of Nursing: Martha Alligood, Rebecca Benfield, Nellie Droes, Melydia Edge, Martha Engelke, Laura Gantt, Phyllis Horns, Darlene Elizabeth Jesse, Bruce Leonard, Martha Libster, Sharon Loury, Martha McAuliffe, Connie Mullinix, Janice Neil, Dorothy Rentschler, Mary Ann Rose, Sharon Sarvey, Melissa Schwartz, Linda Steele, James Steele and Nancy Stephenson.
