Nursing hosts Diversity Day: Up With Nursing in Haiti on April 15

GREENVILLE, N.C.   (Apr. 12, 2010)   —   East Carolina University’s College of Nursing will host Diversity Day: Up with Nursing in Haiti from 10 a.m. until noon Thursday.

This is the college’s second annual Diversity Day which encourages students, faculty and staff to explore cultural diversity, especially as it relates to health care.

ECU’s College of Nursing and the FSIL School of Nursing in Haiti have an ongoing relationship. The college sent text books last fall, and will send faculty and technical support staff this summer to explore possible curriculum assistance at the school. Haiti was devastated by an earthquake on Jan. 12.

ECU students, faculty and staff have been preparing the past several months by holding bake sales and other events to raise $4,000 for five full scholarships for nursing students in Haiti.

On Thursday, Haitian food, culture and music will be shared. Jimmy Hite, a local engineer and board member of the Haiti Nursing Foundation, will speak. Activities will be held in nursing’s front and back lobbies of the Health Sciences Building.

A poster contest on the topic of health care in Haiti also is being held.
