<h1>Personnel</h1>

The Diabetes Clinical Research Center has a staff of 4 Endocrinologists, 2 Research Nurse Coordinators (dedicated to research), a Clinical Nurse Specialist / Certified Diabetes Educator, a Dietitian/Certified Diabetes Educator, 1 Clinical Research Associate, 1 Certified Bone Densitometrist, and administrative and secretarial support.

Our staff has extensive research experience conducting clinical trials in the areas of diabetic neuropathy, impotence, cardiovascular disease, nephropathy, nonhealing diabetic foot ulcers and the treatment of diabetes.

Robert J. Tanenberg, MD, FACP
Professor of Medicine

  • Over 30 years endocrinology experience
  • 25 years of clinical research experience
  • Consultant to NIH for D.C.C.T.
  • At Georgetown University and Washington Hospital Center conducted trials with proinsulin, metformin, acarbose and sildenafil
  • PI for implantable insulin pump trial
  • Published author of numerous journal articles and book chapters on diabetes
  • Director, ECU Diabetes Clinical Research Center since 2001

Almond Drake, III, MD, FACP
Professor of Medicine

  • Nearly 15 yrs of Endocrinology experience
  • 14 yrs of clinical research experience
  • Principal Investigator for large, six year clinical bone mineral density and stress fractures study in over 300 Midshipmen at the U.S. Naval Academy
  • Completed 24 yr U.S. Navy Medical career, July 2003
  • Served as Endocrine consultant to the White House physician and to the Physician to Congress
  • Published author of numerous journal articles and abstracts in area of osteoporosis and bone mineral density
  • Currently Division Chief, ECU Endocrinology and Metabolism, Brody School of Medicine, ECU
  • Certified Clinical Densitometrist by the International Society of Clinical Densitometry

Christopher Newton, MD, MS
Assistant Professor of Medicine

  • Recently completed fellowship training at University of Texas in Dallas
  • 3 years of clinical research experience during fellowship
  • Sub-investigator on numerous clinical trials with inhaled insulin, rosiglitazone, insulin glargine and insulin pumps
  • Sub-investigator for several trials on diabetic complications including neuropathy and retinopathy
  • Published author of several journal articles on diabetes
