Dr. Justin B. Moore conducts research aimed at understanding the relationship between public policy, the built environment, social environments and physical activity in youth. He is especially interested in applying an ecological approach to studying physical activity in rural and other underserved populations. Dr. Moore has conducted intervention research aimed at the prevention of inappropriate increases in adiposity in elementary school children, increasing walking behaviors in rural communities, and reducing obesity in inner city children. In addition, he has conducted epidemiological studies of physical inactivity in rural youth. He is currently leading a study to examine the effectiveness of local policy and environmental changes to promote physical activity in youth in 20 counties across North Carolina, which is being funded by the Active Living Research Program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
Dr. Moore is a member of the American College of Sports Medicine and American Public Health Association. He is the Associate Editor for the Journal of Public Health Management and Practice and currently serves as a reviewer for numerous scientific publications including the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, American Journal of Public Health, and Medicine and Science in Sports in Exercise.
