Greenville is nestled along the south bank of the Tar River, which served long ago as the main means of transporting tobacco and cotton from this largely agricultural region. Greenville has evolved from being known as a agricultural marketplace to being primarily known as the home of East Carolina University. In 1977, ECU Medical School admitted its first four-year class of medical students. In 1999, East Carolina University Medical School changed its name to the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University, in recognition of the tremendous support provided by the Brody family.
Greenville is one of 15 townships in Pitt County. It is the 10th largest city in North Carolina, with a population of 76,058 (2007). Greenville is located just 90 minutes from the beautiful North Carolina coast.
