Research
Division of Research, established in 1998, serves as a major resource for the Department of Emergency Medicine. The role of the Division of Research is to assure that graduating resident physicians understand and participate in research, and to assist the department in achieving its evolving research mission and goals. This includes instructing resident physicians on general research methods including systems for interpreting the scientific literature; assisting faculty and resident physicians in study design, data analysis and interpretation for their research projects; assisting faculty in the preparation of sponsored proposals; and developing and refining areas of research focus for the department.
The Division of Research functions under the direction of the John E. Gough, MD, FACEP, professor and chief, and Kori L. Brewer, PhD, associate professor and associate chief. Dr. Gough has done extensive research in the area of prehospital care, including cardiac care and resuscitation, transport issues, trauma, etc. Dr. Brewer maintains a research program in the field of neurological emergencies including the development of neuroprotective strategies for spinal cord/traumatic brain injuries.
The Division of Research supports and is actively involved in the Emergency Medicine Interest Group (EMIG) of the Brody School of Medicine. Faculty and staff of the Division of Research work closely with the medical students' research and provides research opportunities for the members of that group, along with the resident physicians and faculty of the Department of Emergency Medicine, in the already established research programs involving the clinical practice of emergency medicine, injury prevention, toxicology, Emergency Medical Services and air medical transport.
The Division of Research sponsors an Emergency Medicine Seminar annually for the continued improvement of prehospital care for the sick and injured by providing updates and continuing education approved by the State of North Carolina Office of Emergency Medical Services. The Division of Research attempts to ensure that the seminar program includes sessions that are appropriate for all Emergency Medical Services and Emergency Department professionals.
A major responsibility of the Division of Research is the preparation of the Emergency Medicine Research Forum. This annual event provides a forum in which graduating resident physicians present the results of their research to physicians and scientists across specialties. Numerous projects presented by the resident physicians have been published in prominent Emergency Medicine journals.
The faculty and staff of the Division of Research assist in the coordination and presentation of nationally recognized programs (ATLS, BLS, ACLS).
