The Division of EMS began in 1981 as the EMS Project.  Since that time, it has grown and evolved into a group of individuals dedicated to working with other healthcare professionals to improve the care of patients in the out-of-hospital setting.  The Division works with several counties, hospitals, and state agencies in order to further this goal.  EMS offices are located in Physician's Quadrangle Building M.

Our Mission

To improve patient care in the out-of-hospital environment through, EMS education and research.
Current Projects and Activities
  • Medical Direction  -- Pitt County; for eleven Advanced Life Support Squads and one EMD Communication Center
  • Providing initial training for EMT-Intermediate and EMT-Paramedic students
  • Quality Management (QM) for Pitt County ALS Squads and supporting the county ALS squads
  • Local re-credentialing for EMT-B, EMT-I, EMT-P and EMD.  This includes keep records of testing, oral boards, and written exams.
  • ALS Skill testing and oral boards for EMT-B, EMT-I, and EMT-P's who wish to function in Pitt County.
  • Providing an ongoing continuing education program for BLS and ALS professionals.
  • Assisting squads with upgrading their service level, quality management and assisting them with other problems and questions if possible.
  • Residents and medical students rotate through the Division in order to learn about prehospital care.
  • Perform research on EMS education, airway managment, trauma and prehospital topics.
  • Timber Medic Program (NIOSH sponsored grant)
