Children under age 3 who are suspected to have, or who have already been diagnosed with, a developmental disability are seen in this office. Developmental disabilities include spina bifida, autism, mental retardation and other childhood developmental difficulties involving movement or communication. Our patients have greatly varied needs resulting from illness, injury or delayed development. Children are referred to the center by physicians, health care professionals and parents.
We are the local lead agency for the Infant-Toddler Program, a federally mandated program that is Part C of the Individuals with Disabilities Act serving children from birth to age 3. It provides evaluation, case management and intervention services throughout a multi-county area comprising Beaufort, Bertie, Greene, Hyde, Martin, Pitt and Wayne counties. We provide case management and evaluation services to determine a child's developmental needs. Once eligibility has been determined, case management and services such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech and language services and community-based rehabilitative services are provided. Parents are invited to be engaged with their child's program.
Assistive technology services are also available. Equipment such as wheelchairs and communication devices are available for loan to therapists treating children.
