Overview
Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer found in men and women in this country. The American Cancer Society estimates that 106,680 new cases of colon cancer and 41,930 new cases of rectal cancer will be diagnosed this year. Combined these cancers will cause 55,170 deaths. The death rate from colon cancer has been declining in the past 15 years due to early screening. There are several tests used for screening for colorectal cancer. These are the FOBT or fecal occult blood test, flexible sigmoidoscopy, colonoscopy, barium enema, and virtual colonoscopy.
