Health Tip

What Kids Should Know About Food

Kids Eating FruitWant to be a good teacher? Teach your children how to plan and shop for healthy foods and beverages. Help them understand the “Nutrition Facts” label and use it to make choices. Show them how to use the microwave safely. Prepare a meal with food and drinks from at least three food groups. Encourage them to wash their hands for at least 20 seconds with warm water and soap and handle foods and beverages safely. Teach the rules for leftovers: two hours, 2 inches, four days. That means two hours from oven to refrigerator, 2 inches thick to cook it quick and four days in the refrigerator; otherwise, freeze it. When in doubt, throw it out.

This nutrition tip is from Dr. Kathryn Kolasa, registered dietitian and professor of family medicine at the Brody School of Medicine.
