Heart surgery and other interventions can restore heart function and health to many patients who suffer blockage of their coronary arteries. If you have experienced heart pain, fatigue or a heart attack, you may need surgical intervention. You may also need surgery to repair a heart defect or valve damage.
Other interventions include stent placement and angioplasty, which can restore blood flow to the heart in many cases. Our procedures combine traditional angioplasty with minimally invasive approaches, many of which were developed with participation from our faculty. We are internationally recognized as a leader in surgical robotics, which allows minimally invasive mitral valve replacement and repair in many patients.
Our team cardiovascular surgeons, cardiologists and vascular specialists work together through the unique organization of the East Carolina Heart Institute, which brings them together in a central location on the medical center. It is the only center of its kind in the state and one of very few in the nation.
