Medical Financial Assistance

If you need assistance paying for your medical care at East Carolina University Physicians, you may be eligible for Medical Financial Assistance (MFA).

Medical Financial Assistance (MFA) is offered to all ECU Physicians patients for any medically necessary service received at any ECU Physicians clinic. A complete MFA application must be received by either a financial counselor in the clinic or at the ECU Physicians Clinical Financial Services office within 30 days of when an application is started. Completed applications will include required documentation. If approved, financial assistance will be valid for one year from the approval date.

For patients without insurance, MFA offers a low cost, fixed co-payment amount for each clinic appointment; and a discount on the self-pay balance of all medically necessary services received. Insured patients will be responsible for their insurance visit copay, and will also receive a discount on all medically necessary services. MFA excludes any ECU pharmacy items or medications.

Applying for Medical Financial Assistance (MFA)

MFA applications can be found at the clinic's front desk, at ECU Clinical Financial Services office, or you may download them here:

Clinic financial counselors and Clinical Financial Services office staff are also available to assist with completing an application in person or by phone. A complete MFA application and the required supporting document(s), can be submitted in person to either a financial counselor, ECU Clinical Financial Services staff, scanned or emailed to ECUP-MFA_DL@ecu.edu or mailed to the address below.

  • A copy of your most recently filed federal tax return.
  • Copies of other documents to verify income, such as disability letter, social security letter, unemployment agency letter, alimony/child support payment record; or
  • If your household income is zero, a written letter by group home, shelter director or clergy.
